My journey through wood

Hi! My name is Tim Povroznik. I am an architectural draftsman and CAD manager for a Minneapolis architect. I have been with the same company since 1983, doing hand drafting for my first several years, to computer drafting for the last 25+ years. For many years, drafting was my "artistic" outlet. I was content with this, until one day I saw a book on scroll sawing and scroll patterns at the library. I read it, and was hooked immediately.

The patterns looked fun, and I thought it might be a good hooby. I didn't have a scoll saw, but my wife and I had been remodeling our house at the time. I had a roto-zip saw that I thought might do the trick. I found some thin scrap plywood laying around and started experimenting with my Roto-zip. It worked OK, but looked very rough. Time to break down and buy a saw. Hello Mr. Delta Scroll Saw! These early projects were very basic. After several scroll projects, I wanted more fine detail. I found some great patterns, but they took too long to carve, and if a blade broke while sawing (it happened quite a bit), it scared the bejezus out of me. There had to be a better way!

A light bulb went off at our local Menards one day. I was looking for different ways to carve, and Dremmel had 1/8" and 1/4" plunge router bits. Eureka! I bought a Dremmel 2000 and some bits. This worked fine for a couple years, but 1/8" was just too big! In 2003, a friend and I stopped at a local freight store after deer hunting. We found 1/32" and 1/64" router bits

(box of 30 for $5 each - I bought 2 - shoulda bought 5). I have been carving with these ever since.

Most of my early carvings were given away. Birthday, anniversary, wedding, etc.  Some were donated to silent auctions.

A friend liked my first walleye plaque, and he eventually bought several for his family and friends. Other people have purchased and "ordered" specific carvings.

I have gotten orders and "ideas" from friends for carvings that they would buy. Not as much artistic freedom, but still enjoyable. Anytime I can head out to the garage, plug in the iPod, crank some tunes and carve away is time well spent.

If you'd like to purchase one of my carvings, see costs below.

I hope you enjoy viewing these carvings as much as I did creating it! I also have a page at www.mnartists.org.

It is a fine showcase for different artists from all around Minnesota (check out my friend Bradley Hunt).

Thanks for looking at my web page! Visit again for updates.
